What is the International Phonics Olympiad (IPO)?
The International Phonics Olympiad is India's first structured phonics competition for children from Nursery to Grade 3 (age 3-9). It assesses letter-sound recognition, reading fluency, vocabulary, spelling, comprehension, and verbal reasoning through age-appropriate MCQ exams — going significantly beyond what a regular school phonics test covers. IPO runs three examinations under one platform: the Phonics Olympiad, MathX Olympiad, and Spellathon. Children can register for one, two, or all three.
Who can participate in the Olympiad?
Any child enrolled in Nursery, Junior KG, Senior KG, Grade 1, Grade 2, or Grade 3 is eligible to participate. Registration is open through schools, authorised learning centres, coaching classes, and directly as an individual student on the IPO website. There is no minimum score or qualification required to enter — every child at the eligible grade level can register.
How does IPO help students beyond regular school learning?
IPO helps children strengthen reading and verbal aptitude skills from an early age. Competition Details

How is the offline examination conducted?
The offline examination is conducted in a simple and child-friendly format. Teachers or examiners guide students through the instructions, and children respond through ticking, circling, matching, identifying, reading, or writing answers according to their grade level.
What is the duration of the examination?
The examination duration is *60 minutes*. The assessment is carefully designed to suit the attention span and comfort level of students from Nursery to Grade 3.
When are the examination results declared?
Results are generally declared within *25 working days* after the completion of the examination process.
Are the examinations difficult for beginners?
No. IPO examinations are designed to encourage students at every learning stage. Beginners receive age-appropriate concept-based questions, while advanced learners are challenged through higher-level reading, verbal aptitude, comprehension, and logical thinking activities.

Registration & Preparation

How do students benefit from participating in competitions like IPO?
Participation in a phonics olympiad helps improve reading confidence, communication skills, concentration, comprehension, and critical thinking. It also encourages healthy competition and builds a positive attitude towards learning from an early age.
Will students receive certificates or awards?
Yes. All students participating in the International Phonics Olympiad receive recognition based on their performance in the examination. Example Award Structure (Out of 50 Marks):
  • Rank 1 – 50 Marks: Trophy + Certificate
  • Rank 2 – 49 Marks: Trophy + Certificate
  • Rank 3 – 48 Marks: Trophy + Certificate
  • Merit Rank – 47 to 26 Marks: Medal + Certificate
  • Participants – 25 Marks & Below: Participation Certificate
Students achieving Merit Rank or Rank Holder positions qualify for the next level of the Olympiad.Students receiving Participation Certificates are encouraged to continue improving their skills and may reappear in future examinations; however, they do not qualify for the next level.
How many levels are conducted in the Olympiad?
The International Phonics Olympiad is generally conducted across 4 levels
  • School Level – Approx. August
  • Interschool Level – Approx. November
  • State Level – Approx. February
  • National Level – Approx. April
These are approximate examination periods. Final examination dates are officially declared by the respective schools, institutes, or authorised centres.
Can schools collaborate with the International Phonics Olympiad?
Yes. Schools, preschools, educational institutes, learning centres, and academies can partner with IPO to conduct olympiad exams, literacy initiatives, workshops, teacher training programs, and student skill-development activities.
